Upper River Chew, Nr West Harptree.

Upper River Chew, near to West Harptree.

Available 1st April to the 15th of October.

The River Chew is divided into the Upper and Lower River, the Upper Chew is the water that flows into Chew Valley Lake and the Lower Chew flows out of the lake down to Keynsham where it enters the Bristol Avon.

This is the water immediately upstream of Herriotts Mill Pool which is by the A368, in the past rainbow trout have been known to migrate into the river and Rainbow trout have spawned in this part of the River Chew. Now you’re much more likely to catch a feisty native wild Brown Trout but there’s always a chance of catching a rainbow like the one in the photos which was caught from this part of the river.

The river is an intimate environment which will test your stalking skills, it’s best fished by wading and if you can get your fly in front of a trout before it knows that you there then it’s 90% likely to make a grab for your fly.

Most fish will be small but the Chew has a reputation for throwing up 2 to 3 lb fish from the most unlikely spots.
